FDM 3D Printing
FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) is the most widely used 3D printing technology.
Builds objects layer by layer. Plastic filament is fed through a heated nozzle, melted and deposited onto a build platform where it solidifies instantly.
A key characteristic of FDM technology is that support structures are generated for overhangs. Support material is often water-soluble.
The technology was patented in 1989 by Stratasys as a method where material is extruded through a nozzle to build objects layer by layer.
FDM is a registered trademark of Stratasys, therefore the industry also uses the term FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication).
In 2009 the FDM patent expired, accelerating global 3D printing innovation.
